Re prime lens -- I still haven't bought one, but I'm considering the hard-to-find 35mm 1.8. It will be perfect for my restaurant photography and is AF-S, so it will autofocus with D40, D60, etc.
Not sure if 35mm is good for you, though. I plan to use it almost exclusively for meal photos. I don't think it's nearly as good for portrait photography as the 50mm....
